APJORIS dedicates itself to sustain a broader Islamic Stdies based on the presupposition that the interaction between Islam and society in the Asia-Pacific region has been dynamic. Islam is often seen as antagonist to democracy and civility, but in Indoesia Islam and democracy are seemingly not in the hostile position to each other. Indonesia is now considered as the third largest democratic country in the world where Islam is the religion of the majority. In countries where Muslims are minority such as Thailand, Cambodia, Philippine, and Fiji, the struggle for recognition and in some contexts representation has been one of the main themes in describing the relationship between Islam, state and society. In Australia, as another example, Muslims have also been fighting for better acceptance in Australian society, and internally, they have been faced with differ-ences, which might undermine societal cohesion among them. This dynamic relationship between Islam and society in Asia Pacific tends to develop further and more interestingly as the transnational Islamic movements have become one of key players in predicting Islamic development in the region. |
